The Biafra Internal Government (BIG) and BIM-MASSOB have reaffirmed their commitment to the self-determination cause, declaring May 2026 as another “Month of Freedom” for supporters and sympathizers of the movement. The announcement was contained in a statement shared yesterday through the official Facebook handle of Comrade Ijeomah Anthony, Minister of Information of the Biafra Internal Government.

Biafra Movement Renews Calls for Recognition as BIG and BIM-MASSOB Mark May 2026 Freedom Observance

In the statement, BIG and BIM-MASSOB described the issue as an ongoing political and historical matter that continues to generate discussion among supporters in Nigeria and abroad. The organizations maintained that the struggle remains relevant in contemporary conversations about governance, regional equity, justice, and self-determination.

According to the statement, the month of May holds deep historical significance because it marks two major milestones in the history of the movement. The first is the declaration made on May 30, 1967, during the Nigerian political crisis that later escalated into the Nigerian Civil War. The second is the re-declaration made on May 22, 2000, by Chief Dr. Ralph Uwazuruike, founder of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

The statement noted that every May is traditionally observed by supporters as a period of remembrance, reflection, and renewed commitment to the ideals of the campaign. It added that May 30 remains an important date for honoring men and women who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War and in subsequent agitation efforts.

BIG said the annual observance serves as a reminder of what it described as the continued aspiration for recognition as a sovereign state. Supporters were encouraged to use the month to reflect on the movement’s history, sacrifices, and future direction.

The statement also highlighted the role of Chief Dr. Ralph Uwazuruike in reviving the campaign in the post-war era. According to BIG, Uwazuruike drew inspiration from the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi and embraced the principle of non-violent self-determination.

Chief Uwazuruike founded MASSOB on September 13, 1999, presenting the organization as a peaceful movement dedicated to restoration through non-violent means. Over the years, MASSOB has remained one of the most prominent groups associated with the agitation, emphasizing civil resistance, symbolic protests, and advocacy.

The statement described BIM-MASSOB as continuing in that same tradition of peaceful engagement, maintaining that non-violence remains central to the movement’s identity and strategy.

BIG further referenced its own internal governance structure, stating that the Biafra Internal Government was formally established on December 30, 2019, and has continued to function under a parliamentary-style administrative system. According to the statement, the internal government is currently in its seventh administration and is led by Elder Calistus Eze as Prime Minister.

Supporters of the organization view the existence of BIG as a demonstration of readiness for self-governance and political organization. The statement said the structure reflects continuity with the historic administration of 1967 to 1970.

The latest declaration also linked renewed interest in the cause to broader national challenges facing Nigeria. BIG cited insecurity, economic hardship, declining public trust in leadership, unemployment, inflation, and growing regional tensions as issues contributing to ongoing debates about the future of the country.

According to the statement, many citizens are increasingly questioning whether the present political structure is adequately addressing the concerns of all regions. It argued that these concerns have made discussions around restructuring, regional autonomy, and self-determination more prominent in national discourse.

The statement further cited Chief Uwazuruike’s long-standing proposal for a peaceful restructuring of Nigeria into six republics based on the country’s existing geopolitical zones. Under the proposal, each region would exercise greater control over its security, natural resources, economy, and development priorities.

BIG argued that such an arrangement could reduce tensions associated with centralized governance while allowing each region to pursue policies suited to its unique needs and circumstances.

Political analysts note that calls for restructuring and constitutional reform have remained recurring issues in Nigeria for several years, with different groups proposing varying models of decentralization, federalism, and regional autonomy.

While the question remains politically sensitive and continues to attract differing opinions across the country, the latest statement reflects sustained support among BIM-MASSOB and BIG members for peaceful advocacy and remembrance of the movement’s history.

Observers say the renewed messaging ahead of May 2026 suggests that pro-independence organizations are seeking to maintain visibility, preserve historical memory, and frame their demands within wider conversations about governance and national reform.

For supporters, the month of May remains more than a symbolic date on the calendar. It is seen as a period to honor those who died during the civil war, remember the origins of the struggle, and restate calls for recognition and justice.

The statement concluded by urging supporters to commemorate the “Month of Freedom” peacefully and in an orderly manner, while remaining committed to the principles of non-violence.

The statement was signed by Comrade Ijeomah Anthony, Minister of Information, Biafra Internal Government.
